If you are making the scarf, you will need to work all 12 sections in a continuous strip. So you will cast on for section 1 and you will not cast off until the end of section 12. If you're making the afghan you will be making a total of 8 strips, each 6 weeks long. So you will need to work 4 strips of weeks 1-6 and 4 strips of weeks 7-12. Casting on at the beginning of week 1 and 7 and casting off at the end of week 6 and 12. So you will need stitch holders, especially if you don't want your needles tied up for 12 weeks.

You will need:
Yarn: worsted weight
Needles: size 8 or 5.0mm
Stitches
Key:
K – knit
P – purl
CO – cast on
Pattern
Notes:
This square will be
worked using the stitches left on your needle from last week. You will not bind
off your stitches at the end but instead leave them on your needle for next
week's clue. If you are completing this as a standalone square, begin by CO 28
and knit 2 rows before beginning the pattern below.
Row 1: K28
Row 2, 4, & 6: wrong
side – K2 *P2, K2, repeat from * to last 2 stitches, K2
Row 3 & 5: K2, *P2, K2, repeat from *
to last 2 stitches, K2
Row 7: K2, P2, *sl next 3 sts into
cable needle, hold in front, K2, P1, then P1, K2 from cable needle, P2, repeat
from * to last 2 stitches, K2
Row 8-11: Repeat rows 2 & 3 twice
Row 12: Repeat row 2
Row 13: K2, P2, K2, P2, *sl next 3
sts onto cable needle, hold in BACK, K2, P1, then P1, K2 from the cable needle,
P2** repeat from * to ** once more, K4
Repeat rows 2-13 three
times.
Row 38: K28
For the KAL, do not cast off,
use a stitch holder if needed as we will be continuing to work off of this next
week. If you are completing this as a standalone square, cast of knitwise.
