If you're making the scarf you will need a total of 12 squares, so you will need 1 of each square. If you're making the afghan you will need a total of 48 squares, so you will need 4 of each square. But if some of the squares don't appeal to you, you can substitute that square for another that you do love. The choice is really up to you!

Criss-cross SQUARE

Dimensions: 6" x
6" approximately
Hook: Size 5mm
or H
Yarn: Worsted
Weight/Aran in 2 colors A, B.
Stitches:
CH = chain
SC = single
crochet (US terms)
DC = double
crochet (US terms)
Sl st = slip
stitch
HDC = Half Double Crochet
CS = Cross
Stitch (skip 1 space, 1DC in next 2 spaces, 1DC in the skipped stitch to create
cross)
PATTERN:
Criss-cross square - colors A, B
CH
24 with Color A.
ROW 1: SC1 in
each stitch beginning with second loop from hook. Turn. (23 sts). Bind off
color A after joining Color B into last stitch.
ROW 2: With Color
B. CH3. **Skip one stitch, 1DC in the next 2 sts. Cross over and 1DC in the
skipped stitch** (First CS made).
Repeat from ** to ** to make CS across the
row and 1DC in last stitch. Turn. (7 CS and 2 DC total in the row). Bind off
color B after joining Color A into last stitch.
ROW 3: With Color
A. CH1, 1SC across. Bind off color A after joining Color B into last stitch.
ROWS 4-15: Repeat
ROWS 2 and 3, ending with the ROW 3 pattern. Bind off
and weave in any loose ends.
